  • Sku : FT5HM-1000
  • Cut Type : Standard Cut or Double Cut
  • D1 1" D2 1" OAL 4" LOC 1-1/2" These 5 flute end mills are recommended for milling very hard materials over 50Hrc. They also have a 38° Helix and Variable Index like all our High- Performance End Mills. One critical feature of this end mill is the very thick core for added rigidity in tough materials. The end mills also have an Eccentric Relief with a Heal Grind. We recommend a lighter chip load with this geometry but this added rigidity from the thick core will allow you to run much faster than “regular” geometry 5 flute tools.

Why the Thick Core Boosts Your Milling Performance

Think of the thick core like the backbone of an athlete—it gives strength and stability where it counts. In milling, a thicker core in your end mill means less vibration and better resistance against bending when tackling tough materials. This rigidity lets the tool handle higher speeds and feeds without chattering or breaking down, so you get smoother cuts and longer tool life. It’s like trading a flimsy fishing rod for a heavy-duty one that holds firm under pressure.

Installation and Maintenance Guide

Setting It Up

  • Ensure your CNC machine is compatible with 1-inch shank diameter tools.
  • Secure the end mill firmly in the collet to prevent slipping.
  • Check that the spindle speed settings match recommended speeds for hard materials.
  • Use proper coolant flow to keep temperatures down during operation.
  • Run initial test cuts at recommended lighter chip loads to assess performance.

Keeping It Going

  • Regularly inspect for wear or chipping on cutting edges.
  • Clean end mills after use to remove metal debris and coolant residue.
  • Sharpen worn tools promptly to maintain cutting efficiency.
  • Store in a dry, organized tool rack to avoid damage.
  • Adjust feed rates and speeds based on material and tool condition.

Buying Guide: Choosing the Right 5 Flute Variable Index End Mills for Hard Materials

  • Need help choosing? Consider the hardness of your workpiece; these end mills excel over 50 HRC materials.
  • Not sure what cut type fits best? Standard cuts offer general purpose use, while double cuts are better for specialized applications.
  • Worried about tool rigidity? Opt for tools with a thicker core to reduce chatter and improve speed.
  • Unsure about chip load? Start with lighter loads and gradually increase to suit your machine’s capacity.
  • Concerned about tool wear? Invest in quality coatings or sharpening services to extend tool life.
  • Looking for the right diameter? This model offers a solid 1-inch cutting diameter, balancing reach and rigidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What materials can this end mill handle?

It's designed specifically for very hard materials over 50 HRC, including hardened steels and titanium alloys.

  • Q: What does Variable Index mean?

Variable index means the cutting teeth are spaced at varying intervals to reduce vibration and improve surface finish.

  • Q: Why is the core thicker than usual?

The thick core adds rigidity, helping the tool resist bending and chatter during tough milling tasks.

  • Q: What is the recommended chip load?

A lighter chip load is recommended due to the tool's geometry, but you can run faster than standard 5 flute tools thanks to its rigidity.

  • Q: Can I use coolant with this end mill?

Yes, using coolant is advised to keep temperatures low and prolong tool life.

  • Q: What are the differences between Standard Cut and Double Cut?

Standard Cut is for general use, while Double Cut offers smoother finishes on specific hard materials.

  • Q: What machine compatibility should I check?

Ensure your machine can accommodate a 1-inch shank diameter and has spindle power for hard metal cutting.

  • Q: How do I know when it’s time to Replace or Resharpen the burr?

Replace or Resharpen it when you notice decreased cutting efficiency or visible wear on the cutting edges.
