  • D1 5/8" D2 5/8" OAL 3-1/2" LOC 1-1/4" These 5 flute end mills are recommended for milling very hard materials over 50Hrc. They also have a 38° Helix and Variable Index like all our High- Performance End Mills. One critical feature of this end mill is the very thick core for added rigidity in tough materials. The end mills also have an Eccentric Relief with a Heal Grind. We recommend a lighter chip load with this geometry but this added rigidity from the thick core will allow you to run much faster than “regular” geometry 5 flute tools.

Product Overview

If you’re working with tough metals and need an end mill that doesn’t quit, the 5 Flute Variable Index End Mills for Hard Materials are built just for you. Designed to tackle materials over 50 HRC, these cutters bring a mix of power and precision to your milling projects.

Perfect for machinists and shop pros pushing performance limits, these end mills feature a 38° helix and a variable index design that helps you get cleaner cuts and less chatter. The thick core ensures no flex when the going gets tough, making your tool last longer and your results sharper.

With an eccentric relief and heal grind geometry, you can expect smoother operation at higher speeds despite needing a lighter chip load. It’s an end mill that’s engineered smart, meaning you’ll spend less time tweaking and more time creating.

Why a Thick Core Matters for Milling Hard Materials

Think about trying to cut a dense metal slab with a flimsy knife—it just bends or breaks, right? That’s what happens if your end mill lacks rigidity. The thick core in these 5 flute end mills acts like the backbone, giving it strength to resist bending and vibration. This means steadier cuts, better surface finishes, and tools that stay sharper longer, especially when you’re dealing with those tough-as-nails materials rated above 50 HRC.

Installation and Maintenance Guide

Setting It Up

  • Ensure the collet or holder matches the 5/8" shank diameter for a snug fit.
  • Clean the tool and holder to prevent debris from affecting grip.
  • Check that the tool is properly seated and tightened to avoid runout.
  • Set spindle speeds according to chip load recommendations for hard materials.
  • Use light chip loads initially due to the eccentric relief grind.

Keeping It Going

  • Regularly inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping.
  • Use appropriate coolant or air blast to keep temperature down.
  • Clean flutes after each job to maintain efficient chip evacuation.
  • Store your end mills in a dry, protected area to avoid damage.
  • Sharpen or replace tools promptly to maintain cutting quality.

Buying Guide: Choosing the Right 5 Flute Variable Index End Mill

  • Need help choosing the right tool? Consider the hardness of your material—these are ideal for materials over 50 HRC.
  • Not sure about flute count? Five flutes offer more cutting edges for smoother finishes on hard metals.
  • Wondering about helix angle? A 38° helix helps with faster chip evacuation and heat dissipation.
  • Thinking about your machine setup? Ensure your spindle can handle the recommended speeds and feed rates.
  • Concerned about rigidity? Look for tools with a thick core, like these, for less chatter and longer tool life.
  • Confused about finish requirements? Variable index geometry means less vibration, resulting in better surface finishes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: Can I use this end mill on materials softer than 50 HRC?

While it's optimized for hard materials over 50 HRC, it can be used on softer metals, but you might not get the best performance.

  • Q: What is the advantage of the variable index design?

Variable index reduces chatter and vibration by spacing the flutes unevenly, improving surface finish and tool life.

  • Q: Should I use coolant with these end mills?

Yes, using coolant or an air blast helps to keep the tool cool and prolong its life.

  • Q: What spindle speed is recommended?

Speeds depend on the material but start with lighter chip loads due to eccentric relief geometry and adjust accordingly.

  • Q: How do I choose between standard and double cut?

Standard cuts are good for general machining; double cuts offer smoother finishes and are preferred in harder materials.

  • Q: Can this tool be resharpened?

Yes, when the cutting edges dull, professional resharpening can extend tool life.

  • Q: Is the length of cut sufficient for deep pocket milling?

The 1-1/4" length of cut works well for moderate depths; deeper pockets may require longer tools.

  • Q: What is eccentric relief with heal grind?

This geometry helps reduce tool pressure and heat buildup, allowing faster cutting speeds with less wear.

  • Q: How do I know when it’s time to Replace or Resharpen the burr?

Replace or Resharpen it when you notice decreased cutting efficiency or visible wear on the cutting edges.
