They also have a 38° Helix and Variable Index like all our High- Performance End Mills. One critical feature of this end mill is the very thick core for added rigidity in tough materials. The end mills also have an Eccentric Relief with a Heal Grind. We recommend a lighter chip load with this geometry but this added rigidity from the thick core will allow you to run much faster than “regular” geometry 5 flute tools.

Case Study: Real Business, Real Results

Located in Cleveland, OH, Precision Metalworks sought an upgrade for milling hardened steel parts more efficiently.

"Switching to Burrs4Less’ 5 Flute Variable Index End Mills transformed our workflow. The increased rigidity lets us push speeds higher without sacrificing finish quality. We've reduced cycle times significantly."

Lisa Raymond – Production Manager

Output increased by 35% while maintaining tighter tolerances on hard metal components.

Why the Thick Core Matters in High-Hardness Milling

Think of the core of this end mill like the spine of a runner. The thicker and stronger it is, the more support it provides under pressure. when cutting very hard materials, a thin core can flex or vibrate, ruining both the tool and your finish. Burrs4Less designed this end mill with a notably thick core to keep everything rock solid. This rigidity means you can crank up the feed rates and speeds without worrying the tool will chatter or break early. In other words, it's your tool’s backbone, helping you get jobs done faster and cleaner.

Installation and Maintenance Guide

Setting It Up

  • Check shank diameter for secure fit in your collet or chuck.
  • Confirm cut type matches your milling operation (Standard or Double Cut).
  • Ensure correct tool holder is clean and free of debris for maximum rigidity.
  • Set spindle speeds and feeds according to recommended chip load for hard materials.
  • Always use coolant or mist lubrication when machining to extend tool life.

Keeping It Going

  • Regularly inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping.
  • Clean the tool after each use to prevent material buildup.
  • Store end mills in a protective case to avoid accidental damage.
  • Adjust feed rates if you notice excessive vibration or poor surface finish.
  • Replace the tool once you notice a decline in cut quality to avoid damaging parts.

Buying Guide: Choosing the Right 5 Flute Variable Index End Mill

  • Need help Selecting the right tool? Consider the hardness of your material and pick an end mill designed specifically for that range.
  • Not sure which cut type fits your application? Standard cuts are great for general milling, while double cuts provide a smoother finish.
  • Looking for durability? A thicker core means better rigidity, which equals longer tool life and faster machining.
  • Wondering about helix angle? Higher helix angles help with chip evacuation, especially in tough materials.
  • Checking dimensions? Make sure the diameter, length of cut, and shank size match your machine’s capabilities.
  • Curious about feed rates? Carefully consider recommended chip loads to avoid overloading your tool and workpiece.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What materials are these end mills best suited for?

They are designed for very hard materials with hardness over 50HRC, such as hardened steel alloys.

  • Q: What is the advantage of the variable index geometry?

It helps to reduce vibrations and chatter by varying tooth spacing, which enhances finish quality.

  • Q: Can I use coolant with these end mills?

Yes, using coolant or mist lubrication is recommended to extend tool life and improve performance.

  • Q: What does the thick core do for the tool?

It adds rigidity, allowing higher speeds and feeds without compromising precision or causing breakage.

  • Q: Are both standard cut and double cut versions available?

Yes, you can choose either based on your milling needs.

  • Q: What are the recommended chip loads?

Lighter chip loads are recommended due to the geometry, but this enables you to run at faster overall speeds.

  • Q: Is this tool compatible with standard collets?

Yes, its 5/16" shank fits most standard collet systems.

  • Q: How does the 38° helix angle benefit machining?

It improves chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces, especially important in hard materials.

  • Q: How do I know when it’s time to Replace or Resharpen the burr?

Replace or Resharpen it when you notice decreased cutting efficiency or visible wear on the cutting edges.
