  • Sku : FT5HM-250
  • Cut Type : Standard Cut or Double Cut
  • D1 1/4" D2 1/4" OAL 2-1/2" LOC 3/4" These 5 flute end mills are recommended for milling very hard materials over 50Hrc. They also have a 38° Helix and Variable Index like all our High- Performance End Mills. One critical feature of this end mill is the very thick core for added rigidity in tough materials. The end mills also have an Eccentric Relief with a Heal Grind. We recommend a lighter chip load with this geometry but this added rigidity from the thick core will allow you to run much faster than “regular” geometry 5 flute tools.

Why Thick Core Rigidity Is a Big Deal for Hard Milling

The thick core in these end mills is like having a sturdy backbone that keeps the tool from flexing when machining tough materials. Imagine trying to cut through a dense tree branch with a flimsy saw versus a solid one — the solid saw stays firm and cuts cleaner. This rigidity reduces chatter and vibration, letting you run faster feeds without the tool wobbling, which means better accuracy and longer tool life on those tricky hard metals.

Installation and Maintenance Guide

Setting It Up

  • Ensure proper collet size matching the 1/4" shank diameter for tight grip.
  • Clean both end mill and holder before installation to avoid slippage.
  • Secure the end mill firmly without overtightening to prevent damage.
  • Set appropriate spindle speeds and feeds based on material hardness.
  • Use coolant or mist to reduce heat buildup during cutting.

Keeping It Going

  • Regularly inspect for wear or chipping on cutting edges.
  • Keep end mills clean and free of debris after each use.
  • Store in protective cases to avoid accidental damage.
  • Sharpen or replace tools as soon as you notice performance drop.
  • Maintain consistent light chip load to extend tool lifespan.

Buying Guide: Choosing the Right High-Performance End Mill

  • Need help choosing? Consider the hardness of the material you’re machining—these are built for over 50HRC.
  • Decide on cut type: Standard or double cut options impact finish and speed.
  • Match shank size: Make sure your machine’s collet fits the 1/4" shank diameter.
  • Check flute count: More flutes usually means faster machining but watch chip clearance.
  • Think about tool rigidity: A thicker core helps reduce deflection in tough materials.
  • Consider helix angle: 38° helix helps with chip evacuation and smooth cutting.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q: What materials are these end mills suitable for?

They are designed for milling very hard materials, specifically those over 50HRC.

  • Q: What does variable index mean in this context?

Variable index means the flute spacing is uneven to reduce vibration and chatter during cutting.

  • Q: Can I use these with coolant?

Yes, using coolant or mist is recommended to reduce heat and extend tool life.

  • Q: What is the recommended chip load for this tool?

These end mills perform best with lighter chip loads due to their geometry and thick core.

  • Q: Are these available in different cut types?

Yes, you can choose between standard cut or double cut options based on your machining needs.

  • Q: What is the helix angle and why does it matter?

This tool has a 38° helix angle which helps with efficient chip removal and smoother cuts.

  • Q: What sizes do the shank and cutting diameter come in?

Both the shank diameter and cutting head diameter are 1/4" for this model.

  • Q: Is this made in the USA?

Yes, these end mills are manufactured right here in the USA.

  • Q: Can this end mill be used on softer materials?

While optimized for hard materials, it can be used on softer metals, but performance benefits are most noticeable at higher hardness levels.

  • Q: How do I know when it’s time to Replace or Resharpen the burr?

Replace or Resharpen it when you notice decreased cutting efficiency or visible wear on the cutting edges.
